Keydets hit the road to face Iona College

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coming off a record-breaking performance Tuesday night against Hampton, the VMI lacrosse team hits the road for the third time in the young season to face Iona College Saturday morning in New Rochelle, New York.
 
The first face-off is set for an 11 a.m. start at Mazzella Field.

About Iona College (1-3, 0-0 MAAC)
The Gaels enter their first season as an official NCAA lacrosse program following an introductory probational season in 2024. The Gaels compete in the MAAC for most of their sports and recently introduced men's lacrosse a year ago.
 
Iona has opened the season with a 1-3 mark after defeating Hampton back on February 9 following two losses to Hofstra and Navy to open its inaugural campaign. Most recently, the Gaels are coming off a closely contested 14-9 loss to NEC member LIU this past Saturday at Long Island.
 
Cullen Lawry is the lead attackman with 13 of Iona's 33 goals for the season and has taken a team-high 40 shot attempts. Jimmy Kennedy has logged four goals on the year while Jake Riglietti has three to his name.
 
Denny Piekutowski has seen the most time in the cage as goalie with 150 minutes while keeper Noah Perea has played 90 minutes. Piekutowski has earned 39 saves to go with a .388 save percentage.

The VMI lacrosse team put eight goals up in the opening period and never looked back as the Keydets cruised to a 28-4 record-breaking victory over visiting Hampton University on a cold Tuesday, Feb. 18 night at Drill Field #2.
 
The 28 goals is a new school record as the Keydets previously owned a high of 26 goals set against Virginia Tech in 1989, Greensboro College in 1991 and Virginia Wesleyan in 1992.  On the flip side, the four goals allowed ties for the fourth lowest amount in program history.
 
Rusterucci Watch
VMI senior attack Luke Rusterucci now ranks No. 5 on the all-time list of VMI goal scorers in program history as he has tallied 101 career goals following his seven-goal effort Tuesday night against the Pirates. With four more goals, he'll pass Rob Worrell (104) and will surpass Joe Brockman at No. 3 on the list with 114 career goals. He has scored in 37 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season in 2022. David Hope owns the all-time VMI scoring record with 175.
