Holmstrom named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI sophomore guard Linus Holmstrom has been named the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week following his efforts against Loyola last Tuesday.

The Stockholm, Sweden, native achieved a game-high 23 points in the contest in which he hit seven of nine three-point attempts in the opening half to spur the Keydets to an 86-70 win over the Greyhounds. He hit two free throws in the second half to contribute to his total.

The outburst was just two points shy of his career-high 25 points set last month against VU Lynchburg. He finished the game shooting 7-11 (.636) from the field, all from three-point range.

The seven threes marked a new career high for the guard as his previous high was five set against VUL. Seven threes for a single game is tied for fourth-most in program history, which has happened 21 times previously but had not happened since Devin Butler hit seven versus Carlow back on December 7, 2022.

He also logged four assists and one steal in the win, which was VMI's first ever victory against Loyola (previously 0-4 in the all-time series) and avenged last year's tough 70-67 loss to the Greyhounds in Baltimore.

Holmstrom is averaging 10.6 ppg and shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc this season.

The honor marks the second time this season a Keydet has received SoCon Player of the Week recognition as teammate TJ Johnson achieved the feat back on November 10.

VMI finishes non-conference action this Sunday at instate foe Radford. Tip-off is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start in Radford, Virginia.
