Track and Field announces 2026 indoor/outdoor schedules

LEXINGTON, Va. – After months of training during the summer and fall, VMI Director of Track and Field Zack Scott announced Tuesday his program's 2026 indoor and outdoor track and field schedules.

The teams open the campaign with a quad meet on December 6 named the Col. Bev Read Opener which will welcome nearby universities Washington & Lee, Southern Virginia and James Madison to Lexington for an opportunity to shake off the rust.

VMI will also host its four other annual meets in the VMI Team Challenge (Jan. 17), the VMI Invitational (Jan. 23-24), the VMI Winter Relays (Feb. 6-7) and the VMI Winter Classic (Feb. 14) two weeks before the Southern Conference Indoor Championships, which will be held at the CPTF for a ninth consecutive year.

VMI Director of Track and Field Zack Scott
"I've been very pleased with how our team has adjusted this fall. Practice has been going well, and I want to thank both our student-athletes and coaching staff for their patience and positive energy as we continue to train around the rebuild and installation delays of our new Mondo surface on the 200m oval, sprint straight and jump runways in the Corps Physical Training Facility.

"We're looking forward to the final completion and our scrimmage with James Madison, Washington and Lee, and Southern Virginia on December 6 just before exams. This meet will allow us to test our timing systems, measuring lasers, and performance boards with M&D Timing, while giving the Corps and the Lexington community a first look at our team in action."

The Outdoor Schedule
The Keydets will get back to work three weeks after the SoCon Indoor Championships to begin the outdoor season in Asheville, North Carolina, for the first ever Big South-SoCon Challenge.

After four other outdoor meets – including the Electric City Invite, the JMU Invitational, the UVA Challenge and the Marty Goldberg Gator Invite – the Keydets will head to the SoCon Outdoor Championships set for May 11-12 hosted by Western Carolina in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

Qualifiers will compete at the NCAA East Preliminaries hosted by the University of Kentucky May 27-30 two weeks before the NCAA Championships June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
