VMI Lacrosse opens 2025 season at St. Bonaventure

LEXINGTON, Va. – Following multiple years of growth and progress under VMI Head Coach James Purpura, the VMI lacrosse team is set to begin the highly anticipated 2025 season this weekend when the Keydets travel to St. Bonaventure University for its season opener Sunday morning.
 
Faceoff is set for an 11 a.m. start at Tom and Michelle Marra Athletics Field Complex in St. Bonaventure, New York.

The Keydets – picked to finish fourth in the preseason NEC poll released this week – embark on their first season in the Northeast Conference with great expectations after the accomplishments attained by this year's senior class and upperclassmen the past few years.
 
VMI is led by senior attackman Luke Rusterucci, who owns the seventh-longest scoring streak in the nation at 33 consecutive games. He totaled 33 points in conference games in 2024, second most in program history for a single season, and has reached 30 goals in back-to-back seasons.
 
Senior James Boynewicz anchors the defense with three years of starting experience while junior Adam Norris returns as goalie having started since his freshman year.
 
About the Bonnies
St. Bonaventure is led by veteran graduate student Kellen Pulera, who led the team last year with 22 goals and set a program record by scoring in 10 straight games. Captain Conor Murphy, who was a 2022 MAAC All-Rookie Team selection and a double-digit point scorer last season, will also provide guidance. 
 
Sophomores Jake Kucinski and Patrick Shanahan were first and second in points scored last season with 26 and 24, respectively.
