Track & Field opens with strong results at VMI Team Challenge

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI track and field team opened the 2025 indoor season with school records and multiple personal records Saturday at the VMI Team Challenge held at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
The men's team was highlighted by sophomore Cameron Thomas breaking a new school record that stood for 23 years in the pole vault with a height of 5.10 meters (16'8.75"), topping JB Rosson's previous school record height of 16'3.75" set in 2002. He also beat his own personal-best indoor mark of 16'1.25" set as a freshman in 2024, which was the second-best all-time height in program history.
 
Team Highlights
The Keydets showcased dominance throughout the meet sand sweeps in multiple events, including the 600m, 3000m, and weight throw. The team's depth and versatility were evident, setting the tone for an exciting season ahead.
 
Sprint Events Middle Distance Hurdles
  • 60m Hurdles: Freshman Zachary Denton impressed with a second-place finish in 8.31
Relays
  • 4x400m Relay: VMI's 'A' team claimed victory with a strong 3:23.83, while the 'B' team took third in 3:36.74
Jumps
  • Pole Vault: Sophomore Cameron Thomas set a new school record with an incredible clearance of 5.10m to win the event. Junior Tyrus James secured second place at 3.70m
  • Long Jump: Freshman Zachary Denton leapt 7.03m to take first place
Throws
  • Shot Put: Freshman Tazewell Rae took first place with a throw of 14.30m. Sophomore Elisha Williams (13.92m) and sophomore Rafe Clendenin (13.52m) placed second and fourth, respectively
  • Weight Throw: Sophomore Rafe Clendenin won with a massive 15.99m throw, while Rae followed closely in second at 15.01m
