Keydet women holding strong after Day 1 of SoCon Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The VMI women's track and field team is off to a good start to the 2024 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the Keydets sit in seventh place after the first of two days of competition at Samford's Shauna Yelton Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
VMI is currently in seventh with 12 team points while Samford holds a commanding lead in the league race with 79.5 points ahead of second-place The Citadel with 31 points and ETSU's 30. The Keydets hold a lead versus Western Carolina (9.5) and UNCG (2).
 
All-SoCon honors
*Junior Eleyah Armstrong led the way for the VMI women by earning All-SoCon honors in the long jump with a third-place mark of 5.74 meters.
 
Excellent Performances
*Armstrong qualified for the 100m dash finals by arriving in first in the prelims in 11.57 seconds
*Shea Hart is going strong in the heptathlon, including a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles in 14.64 seconds
*Sophomore Taylor Hill just missed out on All-SoCon honors in the pole vault by placing fourth overall at 3.40 meters
*Hart qualified for the finals in the 100m hurdles prelims by placing fourth in 14.50 seconds
*Sophomore Alina LaForest qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles by coming in fifth in the prelims in 1:04.50. Evelyn Anderson finished 11th in the prelims in 1:10.95.
*Sophomore SeMore Green came in seventh in the 400m dash prelims in 58.90, sufficient to qualify for Tuesday's final round. Green also qualified for the finals in the 200m dash by finishing eighth in the prelims in 25.09 seconds
*Jillian Sisk finished eighth in the steeplechase in 11:46.47
*Senior Jenna Kirkland logged 10th place in the hammer at 38.07 meters
*Gretal Shank finished 11th in the 800m prelims in 2:18.39. Olivia Hurd achieved 19th place in 2:32.06
 
Up Next
The SoCon Championships resume Tuesday with the continuation of the decathlon at 11 a.m. and the heptathlon at 11:15. Day two will air on ESPN+ starting at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

"Our women continue to compete with team captain Eleyah Armstrong leading the way with a third-place finish in the long jump. Freshman Jillian Sisk came up big in the 3,000m with an eighth-place finish and Taylor Hill finished fourth in the Pole Vault to top of the women's scores for the day.
 
"Day two is when our women will make their climb up the list with our team competing in the finals. Shea Hart (Heptathlon), Eleyah Armstrong (100m) , and Shea Hart (100m Hurdles). SeMore Green in the 200m and 400m. Alina LaForest in the 400m hurdles plus finals in the high jump (Morgan Fraser).
 
"There is a day left and too much fight left in our women's team to be considered out of the fight. Especially with the 4 x 100m starting on the track and Shea Hart getting after it in the Heptathlon to get our women going in the right direction for the Southern Conference Championship."
