Lacrosse set to host Canisius Saturday afternoon

LEXINGTON, Va. – In the wake of a big MAAC victory Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's, the VMI lacrosse team returns home to host Canisius University Saturday at noon at Drill Field #2.

From 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday morning, VMI will host a Fan Fest up on Drill Field #1 next to the lacrosse field (Drill Field #2). Festivities will include yard games such as cornhole in addition to frisbees and footballs to toss around. We want to encourage fans to come enjoy the weather, play some games and cheer the lacrosse team on to victory.

The Keydets (5-5, 1-3) earned their first conference victory of the season with their win over The Mount (1-9, 1-3) Wednesday in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Junior Luke Rusterucci joined VMI's prestigious 70-Goal Club in the win by earning a hat trick during the contest and now has 72 for his VMI career, which ranks 14th all-time in the record book with a full season and a half to play.

With VMI picking up its fifth win of the season, the Keydets are off to their best start since the 2000 season and have earned the program's most Division I wins before the end of March since the 1995 campaign. In a lopsided all-time series in The Mount's favor, the win was also significant for VMI's programs as the Keydets have taken two of the last three matchups versus the Mountaineers.

About Canisius (3-7, 1-3)
Similar to VMI, the Griffins are coming off their first MAAC victory of the year as they defeated Siena College in a thriller, 13-12, on the road Wednesday afternoon in Loudonville, New York. Canisius scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation – and the game winner with 34 seconds remaining - to overcome a one-goal deficit for the big conference victory.

The win erased a five-game losing streak, including competitive losses to MAAC foes Quinnipiac, Marist and Manhattan. The Griffs opened the season with a loss at No. 13 Michigan, and have also played mutual opponents in Cleveland State (L, 9-10 2OT) and St. Bonaventure (L, 8-12).

Jackson Webster, who tallied the game-winning goal Wednesday at Siena, leads the team with 16 goals on the season and is trailed closely by Patrick Mitchell's 13 goals. Mason Wolford is also a team leader in the category with 10 thus far. Mitchell is the core distributor with a team-high 13 assists on the season.

Alexis Simard leads the Griffins in caused turnovers with 10 on the year while Reed Conrey has earned seven through 10 games.

Tommy Kunz has played all but 15 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 12.95 goals-against average to go with 118 saves (.480 save percentage) having faced 392 shots.
