Keydets off to strong start to outdoor season

RICHMOND, Va. – Marked by multiple first-place finishes, the VMI men's track and field team got off to a strong start to the outdoor season Friday at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia.

Top Finishes
*Freshman Cameron Thomas won the pole vault with a new school record height of 5.01 meters (16' 5.25" feet), breaking a record held for 20 years by JB Rosson in 2004 (16' 4.75")
*Liam McBride won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.56 seconds. His teammate Xander Tops arrived in fourth in 15.35 seconds
*Senior Andrew Granger finished first in the hammer at 53.26 meters. Freshman Rafe Clendenin was close behind at 44.88 meters
*Clendenin won the discus throw at 47.30 meters in his first time competing in the event at the collegiate level
*Freshman Patrick Lowry was the first collegiate runner to finish the 5000 meter – second overall – in 15:20.66

Excellent Marks
*Senior Charles Male placed second in the long jump at 6.80 meters
*Senior Nick Brown arrived in third in 22.00 seconds, while freshman Jacob Garnett came in sixth in 22.20 seconds
*Senior Richard Edwards earned a time of 48.80 seconds for the 400 meter in fourth place. Freshman Caleb Donaghey came in 12th in 52.11 seconds
*Xander Topos earned a fourth-place finish of 55.83 seconds in the 400m hurdles
*Brown came in fourth in the 100 meter in fourth in 11.16 seconds, while Liam McBride (11th, 11.30s) and Jacob Garnett finished 14th in 11.37 seconds
*Hunter Davis completed the shot put in fourth distance at 14.36 meters, while Christian Hyman (sixth, 13.64s) and Elisha Williams (10th, 12.34m)
*In the triple jump, Charles Male came in fifth at 13.53m
*Isaiah Blount finished fifth in the discus throw

The Keydets will compete at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State next weekend, March 28-30, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
