VMI Women place sixth at SoCon Indoor T&F Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women's track and field team capped off a strong indoor season by placing sixth overall at the 2024 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
The Keydets came in sixth with 68.5 points over the two-day event, just 1.5 points behind fifth-place ETSU. Samford won the team title with 160.5 points and Wofford finished second with 117. Furman placed third with 92 combined points.

All-SoCon Honors
*Eleyah Armstrong had a strong SoCon Championship by winning the long jump Saturday to turn around and win the 60m finals Sunday for the second year in a row with a new PR of 7.44 seconds for the title and All-SoCon honors
*Sophomore Taylor Hill won the pole vault individual title with a first-place height of 3.82 meters, a new PR, to earn All-SoCon recognition and take the podium in first place
 
Great performances
*Jenna Kirkland placed fourth in the weight throw with a new PR distance of 15.00m, her second day in a row of setting a new benchmark. Teammate Diamond Baker came in 11th with a new PR of 12.23m
*Armstrong came in fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.35 seconds
*Julie Freitas placed fifth in the triple jump with a PR distance of 11.57m to earn team points for the first time in her VMI career
*The 4x400 relay team of Heaven Hall, Alina LaForest, Olivia Hurd and Se'More Green came in fifth place in 4:02.00, a season-best time
*Sophomore Shea Hart arrived in eighth place in the pentathlon with 3119 points, finishing fifth in both the 800m (2:38) and the high jump (1.54m)
*In the mile run, sophomore Nathalie Lavender came in 12th place

"We competed to the best of our ability and we never quit. The Keydets closed the indoor season with results we can be proud of this indoor season. It was nice to have family, friends, the Corps and Track and Field alums to witness and cheer us on. We will take a couple days to review, recharge and prepare for the start of our outdoor season in Richmond at the Fred Hardy Invitational on March 22.
