Lacrosse to face High Point Friday night

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hitting the road for the first time this season, the VMI lacrosse team is set to face High Point University Friday at 6 p.m. at Vert Stadium in High Point, North Carolina.

VMI (1-1) looks to continue its momentum following a 14-10 victory over Queens last weekend at home.

The Keydets led by a 9-2 score at the half then clamped down on defense over the final half of the fourth quarter to secure the 14-10 win on their home turf.

Freshman Ty Yonas earned his first career hat trick to lead VMI while Wil Duffy, Luke Rusterucci, AJ Stamos and Austin English each had two goals on the day.

Rusterucci has now scored in 20 consecutive games and hopes to keep it going Friday night against the Panthers.

About High Point (1-1)
Also sporting a 1-1 record for the season, the Panthers play the role of host for a third straight week after opening the season with a 14-7 win over former SoCon rival Mercer on Feb. 2 before falling to #2 Duke last week by a 21-9 count. After facing VMI, the Panthers will take on Queens and Cleveland State, coincidentally VMI's first two opponents of the season.

Brayden Mayea leads the Panthers with five goals this season and is followed closely by Tommy Meehan's four. Matt Lutzel and Nick Rizzo each have three for the season.

Jack VanOverbeke serves as the key distributor with five assists on the year while also leading the squad in shot attempts with 18 so far. Isiah Moran-Weekes ranks second in helpers with three after two games.

On defense, Zack Brenfleck has totaled four caused turnovers, and goalie Zack Overend has played all but nine minutes in the cage thus far. He has 21 saves to his credit for a .488 save percentage having faced 66 shot attempts.
