Rocco promotes Hampton to Offensive Coordinator role

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Football Head Coach Danny Rocco announced the promotion of AJ Hampton to Offensive Coordinator for the upcoming 2025 season on Thursday.

"After the season, I had a chance to reevaluate our staff and take a deep dive into everything we are doing," Rocco said. "We're in the process of making some sound decisions moving forward and the first of those is to promote Coach AJ Hampton to offensive coordinator."

Hampton joined Rocco in early 2023 as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, adding pass game coordinator to his title after helping VMI to five wins and a 4-4 record in Coach Rocco's first season at the helm.

"AJ has done a really good job here with all the different tasks he's had," said Rocco. "He takes great initiative, he takes great pride in his work and I think he's a very talented young football coach."

As the recruiting coordinator, Hampton played a crucial role in bringing in the past two classes (2024, 2025) including 11 on the December 4th signing day. Although he will be elevated to play caller, Hampton will continue to work with the wide receivers in the upcoming year.

"Additionally, we've looked at a couple of different combinations of our current staff as we realign and reassess our coaching assignments and responsibilities," Rocco added. "I look forward to sharing some of those decisions here as we get closer to the start of the spring semester."
