Box Score

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - In a match delayed by nearly three hours due to lightning in the area, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a close 1-0 score to host Gardner-Webb Thursday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

The Keydets (1-5, 0-0) earned plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the match but could not quite get the ball to cross the plane as the Bulldogs (2-5, 0-0) earned the non-conference win on their home field.

Game Summary
*Gardner-Webb's Megan Gettys found the back of the VMI net in the 50th minute (49:49) off a long free kick from Julianna Jatkola and assisted by Lea Gossett for the game-winning goal early in the second half
*VMI won the possession battle for much of the game and outshot the hosts, 17-12, including an offensive onslaught in the second half in which VMI logged 11 shots to GWU's four. The Keydets also displayed pressure throughout the match by earning three corner kicks in the second half and hold GWU to zero attempts from the corner
*VMI keeper Jillian Hall registered three saves on the night and now needs just seven to tie VMI's career saves leader with 296. She had 286 saves coming into the matchup
*Sedona Dancu and Riley Boucher led VMI with five shots apiece while Delilah Martindale accounted for two. Megan Gettys and Julianna Jatkola led the Bulldogs with three shots apiece.
*GWU keeper Stephanie Liu earned eight saves to preserve the home win for the Bulldogs. She logged six saves in the second half alone to keep the Keydets at bay

Close Calls
*While Liu recorded eight saves on the night for GWU, the Keydets came close to scoring on numerous occasions
*Sophomore Riley Boucher nearly put one in for VMI in the first half following a scramble in the GWU box, and redshirt sophomore Sedona Dancu nearly scored in the final minute as she got behind the Bulldog defense but her shot was deflected by Liu to preserve the win for the home team
