Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite tying the game on two separate occasions in the first and second halves, the VMI women's soccer team could not keep pace with the host Spartans as USC Upstate earned a 4-2 win over the Keydets Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Game Summary
*After Upstate's Nya Baccelli put in a goal in the fourth minute of the match (3:40), VMI freshman Barrett Callejo took advantage of a fast break opportunity and raced down the pitch. Upstate keeper Cora Brendle came out of her box to try to kick the ball out of danger but Callejo tapped it out of reach, pushed downfield and shot it toward the Upstate net, where a Spartan defender raced to kick it out but ended up nudging the ball into the lower right corner of the net for an own goal and knot the score at 1-1.

*Upstate would go into the break with a 2-1 lead following a goal by Margret Bjarnadottir in the 20th minute (19:40).

*VMI's Caroline Marini tied it up at 2-2 early in the second half by heading in a free kick from Delilah Martindale in the 51st minute (50:21) for her first career goal at VMI. The excitement was short-lived, however, as Upstate scored the game-winning goal one minute later (51:32) when Dara Russo put a shot into the lower right corner of the VMI goal.

*Emily Sanders scored an insurance goal in the 85th minute to lift the Spartans to the 4-2 win.

Key Stats
*Upstate earned 20 shots to VMI's six, but VMI won the corner kick advantage by a 4-3 count
*In a complete match, VMI keeper Jillian Hall earned nine saves on the day. Brendle gave up two goals but earned the win without any saves during the contest
*VMI's six shot attempts were tallied by six different players. Savannah Noll led the Spartans' offensive efforts with five shot attempts throughout the match
