VMI topped by ETSU in SoCon road match

Box Score

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
- Facing ETSU in the first Southern Conference road matchup of the season, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 score to the host Bucs Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The Keydets (1-10, 0-2) played hard but fell behind in the possession battle as the Bucs (5-1-4, 1-0-1) took seven shots to VMI's one in the opening half and ended up totaling 16 shots to VMI's five. ETSU also finished the day with nine corner kick opportunities in its aggressive attack.

VMI endured the barrage and held ETSU scoreless in the opening half as the teams went into the break tied at 0-0.

Early in the second half, the Bucs got on the scoreboard with a goal in the 56th minute (55:42) when Ruby Teixeira crossed the ball to a streaking Reagan Fitzgerald, who snuck it into the lower corner of the net and the game-winning goal.

ETSU was later fouled in the VMI goal box and Teixeira converted the penalty kick opportunity for an insurance goal in the 79th minute (78:46).

Delilah Martindale led VMI with two shot attempts while Caroline Marini, Madison Hornig and Lauren Fyfe each had one. VMI goalie Jillian Hall finished the contest with four saves.

Close Calls
*A Caroline Marini header off a free kick in the opening half sailed just wide of the ETSU goal
*Madison Hornig took a loose ball from a scramble in the ETSU box in the second half but her shot hit the crossbar and was eventually kicked out by the Bucs' defense
*Fyfe earned a shot on goal in the second half when her shot outside the ETSU box had power but rolled into the arms of ETSU goalie Rhyan Connolly, her only save of the day
