Keydets fall to Samford in SoCon road contest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Facing a tough Samford squad on the road, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 3-0 score to the host Bulldogs Thursday evening at Shauna Yelton Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
VMI (1-11, 0-3) conceded the first goal in the 11th minute (10:15) when Samford's Kyla Reynolds snuck by VMI keeper Jillian Hall and put in a score for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Later in the opening half, the Bulldogs struck again when Layton Glisson found Whitaker Buchanan for a goal in the 39th minute (38:37).
 
The Bulldogs (6-3-3, 2-1) put in one final goal in the 60th minute (59:06) when Layla Brown scored an unassisted insurance goal for the match's final tally.
 
Hall finished the game with 12 saves as the Bulldogs took 30 shots throughout the contest, including 15 on frame. VMI's Sedona Dancu led the Keydets with three shots on the day while senior Madison Hornig added another. Both had shots that sailed just wide of the Samford net to help Bulldog keeper Zoe Clevely maintain a clean sheet.
 
Samford's Mary Raymond led the Bulldogs with four shots throughout while five others logged three shot attempts for the match. The Samford offense registered 10 corner kick opportunities during the game.

The Keydets return home to continue the SoCon regular season Sunday when rival The Citadel visits Lexington. Kickoff is set for a 1 p.m. start at Drill Field #2.
