VMI falls to Winthrop at home

LEXINGTON, Va. - Jumping up quickly on the Winthrop Eagles following a goal by redshirt sophomore Sedona Dancu, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-1 score to the visitors on a hot Saturday afternoon at Drill Field #2 in Lexington.
 
Her second goal of the season, Dancu took a pass from freshman Barrett Callejo, advanced to the top of the box and shot the ball into the upper right corner of the Winthrop net for VMI's early 1-0 advantage at the 15:07 mark.
 
The fun was short-lived, however, as the Eagles responded with a goal by Sophia Balliet in the 25th minute to knot the score at 1-1. The teams went into the break without a goal on either side.
 
Winthrop took the lead in the 59th minute (58:14) when Abbie McCrea took a cross from Lauren Kelly and shot the ball past VMI keeper Jillian Hall for the game-winning score.
