Late Dancu goal lifts VMI to first win of season

DOVER, Del. – With just over two minutes left to play in regulation, VMI redshirt sophomore Sedona Dancu lifted the Keydets to victory with a goal at the 87:36 mark for a 1-0 win at Drass Field in Dover, Delaware.
 
Dancu took a forward pass, used some trickery to evade a defender and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the Delaware State net to give the Keydets (1-2) their first victory of the season.


 
Key Stats
*VMI came close to scoring on several attempts throughout the afternoon. A shot by senior Madison Hornig in the 25th minute required DSU keeper Ashley Maribo to jump high in the air to prevent a first half VMI goal
*A shot by senior Morgan Anderson in lthe 61st minute sailed just wide left of the Delaware State goal
*VMI senior goalie Jillian Hall logged one save during the match to help preserve the win. DSU's Maribo registered five total saves throughout the 90 minutes of play
*Dancu and Hornig finished the game with three shots apiece while Cameron Jones, Anderson and Paige Becker each had one
*VMI won the total shot count, 9-4, as the Keydets outshot the Hornets 7-2 in the second half

"There were a lot of challenging conditions today for us, but I think we showed a really good resilience to battle through them and finally find the goal that was coming. I'm really happy to get a win during matriculation week. We will celebrate it tonight and then turn our attention to a good test against Winthrop Saturday."
