LEXINGTON, Va
. – Matching shot for shot the entire match, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a close 1-0 score to visiting UNC Asheville on a hot Sunday afternoon at Drill Field #2.
 
With 15 minutes left in regulation, Asheville (1-1) reserve Karlee Benz snuck behind the VMI backline and tapped in a cross from Ava Bjorkman-Tracy into the lower left corner of the net to lift the Bulldogs to victory on the road.
 
Game Summary
*The Keydets won the shot battle by a 15-12 count as the teams traded seven shots apiece in the first half
*VMI keeper Jillian Hall recorded four saves in the loss while UNCA goalie Alexis Dooley totaled six saves to preserve the win
 
VMI Close Calls
*VMI came close on several scoring tries throughout the match. In the final minute of the first half, freshman Eva Torres nearly put one in
*Early in the second half, sophomore Riley Boucher took a shot that UNCA's Dooley deflected up and the ball sailed just over the crossbar
*Moments later, freshman Barrett Callejo got behind the Asheville defense and took a shot that hit the right post and her ensuing shot attempt fell into Dooley's arms
*Senior Madison Hornig nearly put one in for VMI in the 82nd  minute but her shot was again saved by Dooley
