LUBBOCK, TEXAS - VMI red-shirt junior shortstop Zac Morris earned a spot on the initial watch list for the 2023 Brooks Wallace Award by the College Baseball Foundation.

The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.

The award honors outstanding defensive play as much as it does production at the plate. 

"I'm super excited for Zac to get named to the Brooks Wallace Award List," said head coach Sam Roberts. "He has worked incredibly hard this year to develop his game both offensively and defensively. To see him get nominated is well deserved. He has put together a very balanced offensive and defensive year and we look forward to him continuing his stellar play."

Morris, from Suffolk, Va., has started all 40 games at shortstop this season for VMI, hitting .323. He has 12 doubles, three triples and seven home runs with 35 RBI and 40 runs. He has 21 stolen bases and boasts a .402 on base percentage and a .553 slugging percentage.
