Granger Opens UVA Challenge with Personal Record

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior thrower Andrew Granger opened competition for VMI Thursday night at the Virginia Challenge with a personal record in the hammer throw at Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Marietta, Georgia, native finished 10th in the event with a personal-best distance of 58.48 meters.

"We are proud of Andrew Granger," said VMI Director of Track and Field Zack Scott. "He is holding his own against some of the best hammer throwers in the country finishing 10th. Under the lights throwing at 8 p.m. with perfect weather conditions, we had a good meet with tough competition. We learned that the life of a cadet teaching us how to handle pressure is perfect for when you are competing against some of the nation's best."

Adidas athlete Sean Connelly placed first with a distance of 73.58 meters. Penn State's Tyler Merkley was the top collegiate placer in second at 71.66 meters.

Eleyah Armstrong will open competition for VMI Friday at 3:50 p.m. when she competes in the 100 meter. On the men's side, Nick Brown and Richard Edwards will run the 400 meter at 5:10 p.m.
