Keydets fall to UNCG in regular season finale

GREENSBORO, N.C.
– Playing in its final game of the regular season, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 5-1 score to host UNCG Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
The Keydets (2-16, 1-8) will find out its Southern Conference tournament destination this evening after all league matches have been played. VMI will play Tuesday on the road at a site to be determined shortly.
 
Trailing just 1-0 at the half, VMI cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the second half when sophomore Riley Boucher converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute (60:56). Teammate Caroline Marini was taken down in the goal box moments before, creating the scoring opportunity for the Keydets.
 
UNCG (7-9-2, 4-4-1) earned the game-winning goal at the 49:26 mark when Taylor Mentzer put the ball past VMI keeper Jillian Hall into the bottom left corner to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead early in the second half.
 
The Spartans would go on to score three insurance goals in the final 27 minutes of regulation to lift the home team to victory.
 
Key Stats
-Hall earned five saves in the 80 minutes of action, while UNCG's Abby Bucholz also had five in a complete game
-VMI's Madison Hornig and Barrett Callejo led VMI with two shots apiece en route to 11 total for the Keydets
-UNCG's Taylor Mentzer led all Spartans with two shots on the day as UNCG accounted for 18 total
