Women’s Soccer season comes to a close in 2-1 defeat at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Looking to earn its first SoCon Tournament win since 2018, the VMI women's soccer team came up short as host Wofford rallied for two goals in the second half to defeat VMI, 2-1, Tuesday night in the opening round at Finley Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

With the win, Wofford advances to face No. 1 seed Western Carolina Friday night in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

The No. 8-seeded Keydets (2-17, 1-8) got on the board first in the opening half (26:05) when goalie Jillian Hall booted a free kick deep into Wofford territory. Freshman Barrett Callejo took advantage of a misplaced kick by a Terrier defender, made a move to her right and struck the ball off the right post to give the Keydets an early 1-0 lead.

The goal was the first of the season for Callejo, who was finally credited with a goal after many close calls throughout the season and a few goals that were deemed own goals for the opponent or flagged for offsides.

The No. 9 seed Terriers (5-10-4, 2-5-2) had several opportunities to equalize over the final 20 minutes of the first half but were unable to capitalize and went into the break down by a goal.

Midway through the second half, Wofford rallied for two back-to-back goals in the 66th minute to earn the come-from-behind victory. Terrier Bailey Mullen scored the matching goal at the 65:10 mark when she put it into the lower left corner of the net, and just 39 seconds later teammate Megan Childress snuck behind the VMI defense on a throughball from Haley McCaffrey and slotted the ball past Hall for the game-winning goal.
