UMBC Defeats VMI in Home Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. - Competing hard on a hot August afternoon, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 score to visiting UMBC in non-conference action Saturday at Patchin Field.
 
Game Summary
  • The Retrievers went into attack mode early in the match and got on the board in the eighth minute (7:37) when Meghan McKye's shot from the left of the box hit the left goal post and bounced in the direction of UMBC teammate Natasha Munro, who shot it into the open net as VMI keeper Whitney Tracy was scrambling for the ball.
  • UMBC tacked on an insurance goal with just over six minutes before the half when Caroline Koutsos took a cross from Abby Joseph and knocked it in for the 2-0 lead going into the break.
  • Whitney Tracy earned her first career start for VMI and finished the game with eight saves to keep VMI in the game up until the final whistle.
  • Munro, Koutsos, and Lola Negrete led UMBC with four shots apiece on the day while McKye and Alyssa Palmucci both finished with three.
 
Close Calls
Of VMI's nine shots at the UMBC net, three were on frame that required a save from Retriever goalie Morgan McGruder. Sedona Dancu, Lauren Fyfe and Isabella Bruzonic were each credited with one shot on goal. In the second half, a free kick shot attempt by Fyfe sailed just above the crossbar.
 
Next Up
The Keydets stay home for a second straight game to face non-conference foe Morehead State Thursday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
