Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Keydets Topped by Winthrop to End Road Swing

Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Despite a nifty goal by redshirt freshman Sedona Dancu early in the second half, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 3-1 score to host Winthrop Thursday night in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Game Summary
  • Winthrop's Annabel Thomas put the Eagles on the board first in the 27th minute (26:29) of the opening half after receiving a high bounce pass and popping it over VMI goalie Jillian Hall's outstretched hands into the net.
  • Two minutes into the second half, Thomas flicked the ball to the center of the VMI goal box where Chela Parris received the ball and put it into the lower left corner in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Moments later (47:50) Emma Smith took a shot from 25 yards out and put it into the upper left corner over Hall's diving effort.
  • Undettered, VMI's Dancu advanced a Keydet possession to the upper left corner of the goal box, applied some trickery and slotted the ball into the upper left corner of the net to put the Keydets on the board.

Close Calls
VMI nearly scored on several opportunities, including midway through the first half when a Dancu shot to the lower right corner required a Winthrop save. With five minutes to go before the break, junior Hannah White tapped a deep pass toward the Eagle net which required a diving save from the Winthrop keeper. At the 36:00 mark of the second half, Dancu got off another good shot in the center of the goal box after teammate Riley Flanagan penetrated the Eagle defense.
