VMI to Face UNC Wilmington at CBI Tournament

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As VMI heads to its first postseason tournament since the 2013-14 season, the Keydets discovered Sunday night they will face UNC Wilmington next Sunday, March 20, at 12 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Florida.
 
VMI enters the field as the No. 8 seed and will serve as the home team against the No. 9 seed Seahawks. The noon matchup will be broadcast on FloHoops.
 
The Keydets and Seahawks have squared off just three times before in the all-time series. The programs last met on November 22, 2014, in Lexington with the Seahawks claiming a 110-93 victory at Cameron Hall.
 
The winner will advance to take on the winner between No. 1 Drake and No. 16 Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday, Mar. 21, at 1 p.m. with a FloHoops broadcast designation.

The College Basketball Invitational basketball tournament runs from March 19-23 at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The CBI, now in its 14th season, features 16 teams in a fully bracketed single-elimination tournament. The event had been held on on-campus sites until 2021 when it was moved to a single site in Daytona Beach due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

VMI (16-15, 9-9) was most recently in action Saturday when it was edged by Wofford 68-66 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, North Carolina.

FloHoops will stream the CBI first round and quarterfinal rounds and ESPN2 will televise the semifinals and championship games. The VMI radio network will also air Keydets games on WWZW (96.7 FM) and on 3wzfm.com and on the TuneIn app. 

The last time VMI participated in a postseason tournament was 2014 when it reached the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com tournament (CIT). Overall, this will be the fifth time the Keydets have participated in postseason play after also appearing in the 1964, 1976 and 1977 NCAA tournaments.
