Lacrosse Hosts Lafayette Saturday in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for a strong start to the 2022 season, VMI lacrosse team will play host to visiting Lafayette College Saturday at noon at Drill Field No. 2.
 
The Keydets are a young squad heading into the campaign but return several strong leaders including junior Hartley Jordan, who finished last season ranked second on the team with 24 points on 13 goals and 11 assists.
 
Fellow junior Scout Ripley returns after leading the team in goals last season with 21. He also tallied an assist and took a team-high 90 shot attempts during the season. Michael Santos ranked second on the team a year ago in goals with 15 and had two assists for a combined 17 points.
 
Senior midfielder Trejan Cannon – a preseason All-SoCon recipient – earned a team-high 33 groundballs in 2021 to go with two goals and an assist.
 
About the Lafayette Leopards
The Leopards are led by sophomore Peter Lehman, who had five points against Penn State last week in a narrow 20-15 defeat, a game that Lafayette led going into the fourth quarter. Lehman finished the 2021 season with 20 goals and four assists in addition to 57 shot attempts.
 
Fellow sophomore attack Charlie Cunniffe had two assists last week at Penn State. He finished his freshman 2021 season with 13 goals and 11 assists for a combined 24 points as well as 43 shots. Cunnife and Lehman both notched three goals apiece last year against VMI, a game which the Keydets came out on top by a 13-12 score.
 
Faceoff specialist Aidan Kelly won 15 of 27 faceoffs against the Nittany Lions last week and logged 10 groundballs in the loss. .
