Keydets Topped by Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Looking to bounce back from Friday's defeat to Samford, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 score to host Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at UTC Sports Complex in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Mocs (4-5-2, 1-0-1) jumped on the Keydets (2-9-0, 0-2-0) early in the game as Sylvie Keck scored an unassisted goal in the third minute (2:54) for the game-winning goal. VMI was able to counter with a few scoring opportunities in the half including three shot attempts but were unable to find the back of the net.

In the second half, Chattanooga's Kelly Tuerff slipped by the VMI defensive backline in the 56^th minute (55:23) and past VMI keeper Jillian Hall, who came out to defend the attack. Tuerff then kicked the ball behind a VMI defender into the lower left corner to score a security goal and 2-0 lead for Chattanooga with 35 minutes left in regulation.

Keck, Tuerff, and Samantha Shaw led the Mocs with three shot attempts during the match. UTC keeper Abbey Saddler earned two saves to preserve the win for Chattanooga after facing seven VMI shot attempts.

VMI senior Maria Vargas led the Keydets with three shots while Maggie Beckman, Riley Flanagan, Dylan Copeland and Lauren Fyfe each had one. Goalie Jillian Hall registered eight saves in the loss and faced 17 shot attempts from Chattanooga.

The Keydets conclude their eight-game road swing next weekend by traveling to league foe UNCG for a Friday night contest then facing South Carolina State for the final non-league matchup of the season.
