Keydets Fall to Samford in SoCon Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Playing its Southern Conference opener on the road, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 3-0 score to host Samford Friday night at Samford Soccer Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Keydets (2-8-0, 0-1) withheld an onslought of Samford shot attempts in the opening half as the Bulldogs (4-3-2, 1-0) took 11 shots to two for VMI. Samford's Kylie Gazza put the Bulldogs on the board with just two minutes left on the clock before halftime after taking a cross from Nikki Bano for the game-winning goal.

Samford controlled the possession battle as VMI struggled to keep the ball on the Samford side of the pitch. The Bulldogs finished the match with 25 shot attempts during the match.

Mary Raymond scored the second goal for Samford in the 58th minute of the second half off an assist from Audrey Kleiman. The Bulldogs would go on to score once more in the 76th minute when Kyla Reynolds took a pass from Kleiman for the final tally of the game. 

Reynolds paced the Bulldogs with four shot attempts while Taylor Yount and Raymond each had three. 

VMI junior Maggie Beckman logged two shot attempts for the Keydets while Gabby Criscione tallied another. Keydet goalie Jillian Hall earned a season-high 10 saves in the loss.

The Keydets continue SoCon play Sunday at 1 p.m. when VMI faces Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
