KEYDETS OPEN SOCON SCHEDULE AND TITLE DEFENSE – Saturday's game with Wofford will be VMI's first of eight scheduled conference games as the Keydets look to defend their 2020-21 Southern Conference title that was achieved last spring. It will be the first time since 1978 that VMI has entered SoCon play as a defending conference champ. Saturday's game will feature the two teams that have won the conference football crown the last four seasons as Wofford finished atop the standings from 2017 through the 2019 seasons.

VMI vs. IVY LEAGUE – The 31-21 win at Cornell last Saturday was VMI's first win over an Ivy League opponent in program history. VMI defeated Columbia twice in 1897 and 1898 but the Ivy League athletic conference was not officially formed until 1954.

ROAD SUCCESS CONTINUES – The win at Cornell continued VMI's recent road success as it has won four of its last five games away from Lexington dating back to last season.

MILESTONE WATCH – Keydet receivers Jakob Herres and Leroy Thomas are both closing in on milestones entering Saturday's game with Wofford. Herres has 197 career receptions and needs three more to reach 200 for his career and join Aaron Sanders as the only two in program history to hit that mark. Thomas needs two catches to get to 100 career receptions and with 965 career yards receiving needs 35 more yards to reach 1,000 yards.

KEYDETS No. 22 IN RANKINGS – VMI enters week four of the 2022 fall season ranked #22 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll and was the third team among others receiving the most votes in the AFCA FCS Top 25.

A VMI Win over Wofford would ...
---Give the Keydets their second straight win over the Terriers and first back-to-back victories in the series since November 7, 1992 when a 44-13 victory in Lexington marked VMI's ninth straight in the rivalry.
---Be VMI's third straight win in a conference opener.

TELEVISION/ VIDEO STREAMING: Saturday's game can be seen on ESPN3 and also in several SoCon TV markets as part of the Nexstar Game of the Week package. Carrying the game will be ECBD/The Lowcountry's CW (Charleston), WHDF/North Alabama's CW (Huntsville/Florence), WMYT/My 12 (Charlotte), WWCW/The CW Virginia (Lynchburg/Roanoke), WYCW/The CW62 (Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville). Pete Yanity will handle play-by-play and Jared Singleton will serve as analyst.

THE SERIES: This will be the 25th meeting between the two schools that first met in 1924. The Terriers lead the rivalry 13-11. VMI claimed the first nine meetings in the series before the Terriers turned the tables with wins in 13 over the next 14 matchups including a 51-36 win in Lexington the last time the two teams met at Foster Stadium on September 28, 2019. Last spring, the Keydets rallied for a 36-31 win over the Terriers and claimed their first victory in Spartanburg after dropping their first seven at Gibbs Stadium.

- CORNELL GAME NOTES -

IRONSIDE ANSWERS THE CALL - VMI redshirt freshman quarterback Collin Ironside threw for two touchdowns to senior wide receiver Jakob Herres and completed 27 of 42 passes for 230 yards in reserve duty help lead the Keydets to victory at Cornell. Ironside was inserted into the game when starting QB Seth Morgan left the field with injury during VMI's second drive of the first quarter. Ironside later engineered a five play, 30-yard drive set up by a Stone Snyder fumble recovery. He later connected on touchdown strikes to Herres from 16 and seven yards.

HERRES TOP TARGET AGAIN – Senior wide receiver Jakob Herres led VMI in receiving for the second straight game with seven catches for 60 yards and his two touchdown receptions pushed his school record career TD catch mark to 25. He has also caught at least one pass in 23 consecutive games.

SNYDER ON THE BALL – Junior linebacker Stone Snyder has racked up some impressive numbers over the last two seasons but still did not have a fumble recovery in his career until his scoop of a loose ball and return of 20 yards to set up VMI's first score against Cornell Saturday.

RICE CONTINUES RANGE - Redshirt sophomore place kicker Jerry Rice kicked his fourth consecutive field goal over 40 yards when he connected on a 41-yarder on the last play of the first half against Cornell. Rice is three for four on the season with all his makes in the fall season coming from 40+ yards.

BRIDY PROVIDES SPARK IN WIN – Senior running back Korey Bridy provided the spark to key VMI's 31-21 win at Cornell September 18. Bridy added 92 yards rushing and a touchdown and his 61-yard kick return set up VMI's last second field goal in the first half which put the Keydets up for good on the afternoon.

KEYDETS OVERCOME MARKERS – VMI's uncharacteristic 11 penalties for 103 yards in the win at Cornell were the most since 11 flags when VMI took on Western Carolina on November 15, 2014 contest at Cullowhee, North Carolina.
