VMI defeated by Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Facing Virginia Tech for the first time in 42 years, the VMI football team fell by a 73-3 score to the Hokies Saturday at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia.
 
With the loss, VMI falls to 0-2 for the season while Virginia Tech moves to 1-0 in their season opener.
 
Key Stats
* Virginia Tech running back Jeffrey Overton, Jr. ran for 104 yards on the night with two touchdowns while Marcellous Hawkins, Jr. ran for 69 yards and three touchdowns
* VT quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer went 17-20 passing for 224 yards and two touchdown passes. Backup Bryce Baker went 10-12 for 127 yards and a 40-yard touchdown pass
 
Game Summary
First Quarter
The Hokies got on the board on their first possession scoring on a 50-yard rush by Jeffrey Overton, Jr. After blocking a VMI punt, the Hokies took advantage of a short field and scored on a Marcellous Hawkins nine-yard scamper for a quick 14-0 advantage at the 9:30 mark. Virginia Tech would go on to add another touchdown at the 4:56 mark when Overton, Jr. found the endzone again for a 21-0 Hokie lead after one period.
 
Second Quarter
Virginia Tech opened the second quarter with a Hawkins one-yard rush up the middle for a touchdown for a 28-0 Hokie lead. The Keydets would hold the Hokies to a 32-yard field goal on Virginia Tech's next possession which John Love put through the uprights.
With 5:13 before the half, Hokie QB Ethan Grunkemeyer connected with Que'Sean Brown on a crossing route in the middle of the field and Brown outran the Keydet secondary for a 51-yard touchdown reception. Virginia Tech blocked its second VMI punt of the game deep in VMI territory and Knahlij Harrell jumped on the loose ball in the end zone to give the Hokies a 45-0 lead going into halftime.
 
Third Quarter
The Hokies scored on their opening possession of the second half when Luke Reynolds received a 21-yard touchdown pass from Grunkemeyer. Following an interception, the Hokies scored on a Hawkins two-yard rush to go up 59-0 at the 6:52 mark. Virginia Tech would go on to score once more in the stanza when backup quarterback Bryce Baker found Chanz Wiggins in the back of the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown reception to make it 66-0 going into the fourth. 
 
Fourth Quarter
Virginia Tech's A.J. Brand opened the final quarter with a one-yard rush up the middle to make the score 73-0 with 10:38 to play. Midway through, VMI kicker Jack Joyce put the Keydets on the board with a 50-yard field goal, a career-best kick.
 
Up Next
After two road games to start the season, the Keydets host Bucknell for the 2026 home opener next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Foster Stadium.
