VMI Football Begins Preseason Camp Friday

Preseason Notes 

LEXINGTON, Va. – The defending Southern Conference football champions VMI Keydets begin their August preseason practice schedule Friday morning, August 6 at Fiorini Field – the turf practice facility located adjacent to Foster Stadium.

Friday's workout will begin a string of practices that will extend throughout the month of August in preparation for the season opener September 4 against Davidson in Lexington. All workouts will be held in the morning at Fiorini Field with the exception of August 14 which will be located at Foster Stadium.

The August camp marks the return of full-time team activities since VMI's historic spring 2021 campaign when the Keydets went 6-2 and captured their first SoCon title since 1977 and attained the program's first-ever FCS national ranking and playoff appearance. VMI finished the season ranked 12th in the final Stats Perform FCS poll and swept the SoCon postseason awards with wide receiver Jakob Herres earning Offensive Player of the Year honors and linebacker Stone Snyder being selected as Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman quarterback Seth Morgan took SoCon Freshman of the Year honors while head coach Scott Wachenheim was awarded Coach of the Year and later presented FCS National Coach of the Year honors by both Stats Perform and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

VMI returns a robust number of personnel from last year's championship team with 16 starters returning including 10 on the offensive side and 6 on defense. All three key special teams contributors return including long snapper Robert Soderholm who earned Stats Perform FCS All-America honors.

The Keydets enter the 2021 fall campaign ranked 14th nationally in the Stats Perform FCS preseason poll.
