Jenkins Sets School Record in Steeplechase

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The VMI track and field teams competed for personal bests and NCAA invites at two meets on Saturday. The teams split to cover the Lee University Last Chance in Cleveland, Tennessee, and the Mount Olive First Chance Invite in Mount Olive, North Carolina.

At the Lee University meet, junior Gavin Jenkins set a new school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:44.56 to improve his previous time by 10 seconds. Jenkins improved his PR to stay in the race for an NCAA Regional invite. His time topped the former VMI record by a tenth of a second (8:44.66) held by VMI great Donnie Cowart in 2009.

Freshman Andrew Granger finished fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.80m. Freshman Keyandre Midgett placed ninth in the triple jump (13.98m).

At the Mount Olive meet, Jordin Poindexter pulled double duty competing in the 100 and 200 meter dash. He finished 10th in the 100 (10.69) and fourth in the 200 (21.54). Jonathan Gray finished 12th in the 200 (22.34), with Johnnie Walker placing 15th overall (22.56).

Poindexter, Walker, and Gray will compete Sunday in the Aggie Classic Twilight in Greensboro, North Carolina.
