THE SERIES: Saturday's meeting between VMI and Furman will be the 39th meeting between the schools with the Paladins holding a 28-10 advantage. Furman has taken 26 of the last 28 matchups with VMI's two wins coming in 2014 and Spring 2020-21 in Lexington. In last year's meeting, the Keydets upset the #10 ranked Paladins, 14-13. VMI has not prevailed in Greenville since 1977 and has dropped 14 straight on the Paladins home field. The schools first met in 1946 before resuming the series in 1970.

KEYDETS CLOSE OUT ROAD SCHEDULE AT FURMAN – VMI travels to Greenville, South Carolina this Saturday to face the Furman Paladins Bucs in a 2 pm kickoff at Paladin Stadium. The Keydets stand 4-2 in league play after falling to ETSU in Johnson City last weekend in a showdown of FCS nationally ranked teams. Mercer, Chattanooga, and ETSU all are tied for first place with 5-1 marks with two weeks to go in the regular season. The Keydets will need wins in their final two games against Furman and Western Carolina plus help from other SoCon teams to keep their FCS playoff hopes alive.

HERRES CLOSES IN ON ALL-TIME MARKS – With nine catches for 90 yards against ETSU last Saturday, senior wide receiver Jakob Herres now has 226 career catches - 8 behind all-time leader Aaron Sanders who had 234 between 2013-16. Herres also has 3006 career receiving yards which is 85 yards behind Mark Stock (1984-88) for the all-time #1 spot. Herres also has a 27-game reception streak and already holds the career mark for touchdown receptions with 26.

RICE CONTINUES ACCURACY – Sophomore kicker Jerry Rice continued his outstanding season with field goals of 48 and 37 yards against ETSU to make him 15 of 17 on the season with six field goals of 40 yards or longer. He is also 32 for 32 in extra points in 2021.

RANKINGS HOLD – VMI this week retained its national rankings status with the No. 21 spot in the Stats Perform poll and No. 23 in the AFCA Top 25 poll.

A VMI Win over Furman would ...
---Be VMI's first win in Greenville since 1979
---Move VMI to the seven-win mark for the first time since 1977
---Give VMI three road wins for the second consecutive year.

CHART WATCH  – Junior wide receiver Leroy Thomas caught six passes for 45 yards against ETSU now stands seventh all-time in career receptions with 127 which stands seventh all-time at VMI. Redshirt sophomore Seth Morgan posted his eighth 220-yard passing game (248 yards) against ETSU and is now tied with Dave Brown (1985-88) for fifth most in school history.

BACK-TO-BACK WINNING SEASONS ATTAINED – VMI's come-from-behind 46-45 win over Samford October 30 clinched the second straight winning season for the Keydets and marked the first time since 1961-62 that a VMI football team had posted winning campaigns in consecutive years.

MORGAN MAKES HIS MARK – With 525 yards total offense against  Samford, VMI quarterback Seth Morgan set a new VMI single game total offense record. Morgan completed 28 of 42 passes for 472 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 53 yards in the 46-45 win over the Bulldogs. The 472 yards was also the second highest single game mark by a VMI quarterback in program history – behind only Reece Udinski's 491 yards against Western Carolina in 2018. Morgan's 400+yard game against Samford was only the fifth all-time in school history.
