Keydets Fall Victim to The Citadel at Home

LEXINGTON, Va. - Hoping to return home with a win after playing on the road the past five weeks, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-0 score to visiting rival The Citadel Friday evening at Patchin Field.
 
VMI (3-11-0, 0-4) came close to scoring on several occasions but couldn't find the back of The Citadel net as the Bulldogs (9-4-0, 3-2) outshot the Keydets by a 20-9 margin.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 28th minute when Mel Mikoy advanced the ball to Maria Contreras, who crossed the ball deep into the VMI box and found Jordyn Geller for the game-winning goal.
 
Midway through the second half, VMI senior Maria Vargas received a cross from Whitney Edwards-Roberson and headed it toward The Citadel net but keeper Jess Newton earned the save to preserve her shutout victory.
 
Late in the match in the 78th minute, Ani Ford advanced the ball to Geller, who raced past the VMI backline and found the lower left corner of the net for a security goal and her sixth goal of the season.
 
VMI freshman Riley Flanagan led the Keydets with three shots in the game while Edwards-Roberson finished with two. Geller led the Bulldogs with nine shot attempts throughout the match.
 
The Keydets return to action Sunday for a Senior Day matchup against Mercer at 1 p.m. at Patchin Field.
