LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men's soccer team battled to a 3-3 double overtime tie Saturday against visiting UNC-Asheville in a non-conference game from Patchin Field. Senior keeper
Broden Schull, honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day, made 11 saves on the afternoon.
The Keydets struck early and often offensively, finding the back of the net on each of their first three shots. Freshman
Grant Martin opened the scoring just 48 seconds in on a feed from fellow freshman
Cole Mooney. Martin found sophomore
Warner Collier at the 5:27 mark and Mooney made the score 3-0 on a pass from freshman
Woongchan Oh just 12:35 into the game.
The Bulldogs countered quickly however, with back-to-back goals in a 41-second span. Justin Fleer put UNC-A on the scoreboard at the 14:11 mark and Nate Evans followed at 14:52. The score remained 3-2 in favor of VMI until after three minutes after intermission when Evans' second goal of the contest tied the game.
Both teams had opportunities at the end of regulation and in each overtime period but couldn't convert. Schull made three of his stops in overtime.
UNC-Asheville (1-10-1) outshot VMI 29-17 and had a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Keydets (1-14-1) host Furman University next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in a Southern Conference game and the final regular-season contest of the 2021 campaign.
