VMI Falls in Close 1-0 Battle with Catamounts

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - A VMI own goal in the first half lifted the visiting Catamounts of Western Carolina University to a 1-0 victory over the VMI women's soccer team Friday evening at Patchin Field.

Western Carolina's Payton Creed took a shot from inside the VMI box that bounced off the left post and deflected off VMI keeper Jillian Hall and into the net for an own goal that lifted the Catamounts to victory.

Although the Keydets (3-14-1, 0-7-1) were allowed just six shot attempts during the match, VMI came close to scoring on a Lauren Fyfe shot that sailed just wide of the WCU net in the second half.

VMI senior Sarah Anschutz led the Keydets with two shots during the game, including one that soared just above the crossbar to nearly equal the score at one apiece. Morgan Anderson, Isabella Bruzonic and Hannah White were also credited with shots in the contest.

Maggie Lloyd and Valentine Pursey led the Catamounts with five shots apiece while Kirsten Hahn contributed four.

Hall finished the game with 11 saves for VMI in the loss while Western's Ashlee Owens earned two saves in her individual victory.

The Keydets complete the regular season at home Sunday when the ETSU Bucs pay a visit to Patchin Field for a 2 p.m. start.

The Southern Conference tournament begins Wednesday, October 27.
