VMI Football Back in FCS National Polls

LEXINGTON, Va. – Following an impressive 45-7 road win over Mercer last Saturday, the VMI football team returned to the FCS top 25 national polls after a two-week absence.

In the latest rankings released Monday, October 18, the Keydets are ranked No. 21 in the Stats Perform Top 25 FCS poll and No. 23 in the AFCA FCS coaches poll.

VMI (5-2, 3-1) is currently in a three-way tie with ETSU and Mercer for first place in the SoCon football race with Furman and Chattanooga both 2-1 on the season in conference play. The Keydets the past two games knocked off the Mocs in OT, 37-34 in Lexington before dominating Mercer last Saturday in Macon. The Keydets held a Mercer rushing offense ranked fifth in FCS at 280.0 yards per game to just 23 yards on the ground while rolling up 306 yards on the ground behind running backs Rashad Raymond (163 yards) and Hunter Rice (112 yards).

VMI, which captured its first SoCon football league title in 43 years last spring and finished the season ranked 12th in the Stats Perform final 2021 spring season poll, entered the 2021 fall campaign ranked 17th in the Stats Perform Poll and 19th in the AFCA poll and was ranked the first four weeks of the season before falling out of both polls following a 35-24 setback at The Citadel October 2.

The Keydets have a bye week this Saturday before returning to action October 30 at home against Samford. Kickoff will be 1:30 pm and tickets may be purchased at www.vmitickets.com.
