Furman Earns 3-2 Comeback Win over VMI

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Ahead by a 2-0 advantage at the half, the VMI women's soccer team surrendered three second-half goals to the host Furman Paladins to fall by a 3-2 score Friday night at Paladin Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Keydets (3-12-1, 0-5-1) took advantage of early scoring opportunities and got on the board quickly in the second minute of the match (1:39) when freshman Riley Flanagan scored an unassisted goal for an early 1-0 lead. The Round Hill, Virginia, native shot the ball from 22 yards out and into the far side for the Keydets' fastest lead of the season. The goal was her eighth of the season as she continues to lead the team as one of the conference leaders for the category.

Senior Whitney Edwards-Roberson joined the action moments later in the 12th minute (11:52) when she took a through ball from Flanagan and shot it into the back of the net near the left post for a 2-0 VMI advantage.

Despite outshooting the Keydets 12-5 in the opening half, the Paladins (7-5-1, 3-3) could not score against VMI in the first 45 minutes of the match as VMI took a 2-0 lead into the break.

The fun was short-lived, however, as the tide shifted to the Paladins' favor in the latter half when Furman got on the board in the 70th minute (69:55) with a Nieva Gaither goal. Gaither would tie the game moments later (72:35) with an unassisted goal after penetrating the Keydet defense and putting the ball in from inside the 18.

Both squads battled the remainder of the match and appeared to be heading to overtime until the Paladins' Kyndal Anderson scored with 3:32 left in regulation for the game-winning goal. She took a rebound off a shot by Isabella Gutierrez that hit the right post and knocked it in herself to lift the Paladins to victory.

The Paladins finished the match with 35 shot attempts to seven for the Keydets. Flanagan, Edwards-Roberson and Maggie Beckman all had two shots attempts for VMI while Sarah Anschutz added another. Furman's Gutierrez and Anderson led the Paladin team with eight shots apiece on the night while Gaither contributed seven.

The Keydets return to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. kick against the Wofford Terriers in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
