Keydets Earn 2-2 Tie on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. - With five senior cadet-athletes playing one of their final times at Patchin Field, the VMI women's soccer team earned a hard-fought and physical 2-2 draw on Senior Day against Mercer Sunday afternoon in Lexington.

Before the game, seniors Sarah Anschutz, Gabby Criscione, Erin Kozlowski, Whitney Edwards-Roberson and Maria Vargas were recognized for their accomplishments the past four years.

A physical match that featured over 30 combined fouls, VMI (3-11-1, 0-4-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit early in the second half to knot the score at two apiece with two goals in the final 40 minutes.

Ally Fordham scored both goals for the Bears (5-4-4, 2-1-3) with the first coming as a penalty kick in the 35th minute of play (34:05). In the 49th minute (48:26) early in the second half, she notched her second goal of the game and seventh of the season as she took a cross from Ciara Whitely deep into the VMI box and headed it into the lower left corner for a 2-0 lead.

Undeterred, the Keydets continued to battle and just moments later (50:28) Gabby Criscione was fouled in the Mercer goal box and given a penalty shot. She took advantage of the opportunity and knocked it into the lower left corner to cut the Mercer lead to 2-1 with 40 minutes to play.

At the 61:12 mark, VMI freshman Riley Flanagan drove the ball deep into Mercer territory and crossed the ball into the middle of the box where junior Sam Fee received it and put it in to tie the game at two apiece.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the final 30 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods but neither could find the back of the net again.

Vargas led VMI with three shots in the game while Maggie Beckman and Flanagan both took two. Whitely and Payton Schurr led the Bears with five shots apiece.

The Keydets hit the road for a final time in conference play as they travel to Furman for a match Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Wofford College Sunday at 1 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
