Keydets Fall in 2-1 Contest at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Looking for its first conference win of the season, the VMI women's soccer team fell by a 2-1 score in a hard-fought contest Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Spartans (2-4-5, 1-1-1 SoCon) got on the board first in the 19^th minute (18:07) with a goal by Caroline Woods that she put in the bottom left corner of the net.

Later in the first half, her teammate Ashley Avelino found the back of the VMI net in the 38^th minute (37:00) off a free kick from Gabi Santora. While Keydet goalie Jillian Hall dove for the ball, Avelino received it deep into the VMI box and put it into the lower right corner in what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The teams traded shots throughout the second half and VMI (2-10-0, 0-3-0) notched a goal in the final moments (88:38) when junior Maggie Beckman snuck the ball into the bottom left corner off her right foot to keep VMI from going scoreless.

Despite going into a 2-0 deficit at the half, the Keydets outshot the Spartans by a 7-5 count before UNCG took 13 shots in the second half to four for VMI.

VMI goalie Jillian Hall earned seven saves during the match while Abby Buchholz logged four in her individual win.

Keydet senior Whitney Edwards-Roberson, who came close to scoring a goal in the first half, finished with a team-high three shots while Riley Flanagan and Ella Flickinger both had two.

Woods and Santora led UNCG with four shots apiece while Hannah Morton and Laura Aalmans each had two.

VMI returns to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup at South Carolina State in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
