Keydets off to Great Start at VMI Winter Relays

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hosting a meet for the third straight weekend, the VMI track and field teams are off to a solid start on the first day of competition at the VMI Winter Relays contested Friday afternoon.

Senior sprinter Ariana Ruffin opened up in the 400-meter with a first-place finish of 57.09 seconds, which is currently the top time in the Southern Conference for the event.

In the men's 400-meter, Jonathan Gray and Johnnie Walker both ran a 49.69 to move into second and third on the Southern Conference listing of top times for the event.

"The team continues to work one day at a time and continue to improve each day," said VMI Director of Track and Field Darrin Webb. "I'm very pleased with where they are. I expect more of the same tomorrow - high energy and high effort."

In the men's 1000-meter, VMI claimed the top five spots led by sophomore Trent Whittaker and senior Gavin Jenkins as both ran the discipline in 2:28. Walt Kitson came in third in 2:32 and was followed by Zach Lauster (2:32) and Stephen Kelley (2:33).

In the women's weight throw, Stephanie Jones came in fourth with a distance of 13.62 meters (44'8.25"). Senior Ariel Endicott placed 10th overall at 12.41 meters (40'8.75"). On the men's side, sophomore Herbert Brooks arrived in fourth overall at 14.77 meters (48'5.50") and freshman Andrew Granger came in fifth at 14.66 meters (48'1.25").

After four events in the men's heptathlon, junior Max Burke finds himself in fourth place overall with 2472 points and is followed closely by Stephen Munson, who is presently in fifth with 2327 points.
