Was it just ten years ago? There were plenty of exciting sports moments at VMI in the spring of 2010. Here is a quick look back at some of the memorable highlights the Keydet teams produced that season.
2010 Baseball
• The Keydets pounded #1 Virginia, 12-3, at Gray-Minor Stadium, the first win for any VMI athletic team over a top-ranked opponent. The April 14 victory was fueled by current VMI assistant
Sam Roberts. The shortstop, batting leadoff, went 2-3 with three runs scored, four RBI and a home run. Freshman outfielder Rob Dickinson also homered to seal the victory over the Cavaliers. He is greeted at home plate in the photo shown.
• The 2010 team blistered the ball at the plate, setting new school records for batting average (.325), slugging percentage (.529), hits (629), runs (414), doubles (133), home runs (78), RBI (390), at bats (1933) and total bases (1022). VMI set the school record for most wins in a season with a 33-22 record, including a 21-13 mark at home.
• Freshman second baseman Cory Spangenberg, who went on to play for the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers, earned three Freshman All-American honors, in addition to being named the Big South Conference and State Freshman of the Year, while senior first baseman Jordan Ballard was drafted by the Colorado Rockies.
2010 Men's Outdoor Track and Field
The 2010 track and field season was highlighted by Felix Kitur (shown in photo), who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships by way of his second-place finish in the 800-meter at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries. He finished 19th overall at the NCAA Championships after placing fourth in his heat at the event. Prior to NCAA, Kitur competed at the IC4A Championships where he placed second overall in the 800m by posting a career-best time of 1:47.62, which ranked No. 8 in the NCAA entering the championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Eldoret, Kenya, native finished his career two years later as a four-time NCAA qualifier and two-time honorable mention All-American, including a ninth-place mark at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800m. He was an eight-time Big South champion (5x outdoor, 3x indoor) in the 800m and two-time 1500m Big South champ en route to 14 total All-Big South honors.
Kitur still holds the Big South and VMI records in both the indoor and outdoor 800 meters.
2010 Lacrosse
Senior All-American midfielder Tim Moran led the team in scoring with 41 points on 24 goals and 21 assists. The Florence, New Jersey, native and two-time team captain finished his career as a member of VMI's prestigious 100-Point Club (1 of 17), the 70-Goal Club (1 of 13), and the 50-Assist Club (1 of 10). He was voted as the team's MVP both as a junior and senior and ended his career as a three-time First Team All-MAAC recipient. Following the season he was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
Women's Water Polo
One of VMI's most successful sports over the past decade, the VMI women's water program was announced prior to the start of the 2010 spring semester and would begin competition two years later in the spring of 2012.
Anna Phelps was hired as the program's first head coach on May 5, 2010.
