LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI senior
Jon Clines earned first-team academic district 3 baseball honors Thursday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Clines converted from a pitcher to a designated hitter midway through his junior season, then transitioned to firstbase as a senior. He set a new program single-game record with nine RBI in the second contest of a double header sweep of Quinnipiac University (Conn.) this spring. He was 2-3 with two RBI in the opener, but was just getting warmed up for his record-breaking performance in the nightcap. The McLean, Va. native doubled to right center in the bottom of the first inning to plate three Keydets, and was just inches from a grand slam. He followed with a three-run home run in the second and homered again with two runners on in the eighth. For the day he went 5-8 with three runs, two doubles, two homers, 11 RBI and a walk.
"We are really proud of Jon and he is more than deserving for this recognition," said VMI head mentor
Jonathan Hadra. "Jon as always been an exceptional student, cadet, and teammate since he arrived on Post. He has had to fill multiple roles on the baseball field and has always taken each in stride with a team first attitude. He is a fantastic teammate, leader, and person and we are looking forward to seeing the incredible things Jon will do after his time at VMI."
Clines boasts a cumulative grade point average of 3.79 while majoring in economics and business.
First Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America honorees will be announced in June.
