LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for its first 2-0 start since the 2000 season, the VMI lacrosse team hosts a second straight game as the NJIT Highlanders visit Lexington for a noon matchup on Drill Field No. 2.
Last week VMI (1-0) defeated Manhattan College by an 11-10 count to register its first season-opening win in 19 years when VMI defeated Virginia Tech by a 9-7 score. That was the same season VMI last opened with a 2-0 start as the Keydets would defeat Holy Cross two weeks later.
Sophomore attack Ryan Perouty looks to continue a hot start to the season as he scored a game-high four goals to lead VMI to the win over the Jaspers. Currently second in the SoCon at 4.00 goals per game, he is tied for 10th nationally in consecutive games with a goal as he has tallied 33 goals over the past 14 games since the first game of his freshman season. He has scored at least one goal in every game of his VMI career to this point.
Senior defender Kyle Walsh, one of the nation's leading returners in caused turnovers per game, claimed five caused turnovers last week to keep the Jaspers away from the VMI net. In his first ever start, VMI keeper Benjamin Stump recorded 14 saves to help preserve VMI's big win.
