LEXINGTON, Va. - After weeks of improving times and marks to prepare for the postseason, the VMI track and field teams are set to host the 2019 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington.

The multi-events begin at 9 a.m. both days. On Saturday, the track and field events will run from 2 p.m. to approximately 6:45 p.m. On Sunday, the track and field events begin at 10 a.m.and will go to about 4 p.m.

Ariana Ruffin and Johnnie Walker were named the SoCon women's and men's track Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their finishes in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter races this past weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Walker won the 400-meter run and placed seventh in the 200-meter, posting a season-best time of 49.82 in the 400m, the fifth-best time in the league.

Ruffin posted a lifetime-best in the 200m on Friday, placing sixth in 25.26 seconds. She also arrived in sixth in the 400m with a time of 58.00 seconds. Her 200m ranks seventh on the SoCon performing list this season while her 400m is presently fifth best in the conference.

At the VMI Winter Relays two weeks ago, the women's 4x400 group of Eliza Brooks, Ingrid Joseph, Ahliyah Williams and Ariana Ruffin earned a school record time of 3:54.23, five seconds faster than the previous school record set at the Keydet Invitational three weeks before by the same foursome. The unit continues to improve as they bested the prior school record time of 4:00.82 set in 2018. The time is also ranked in the top three of the Southern Conference.
