LEXINGTON, Va. - Heading into this weekend's season-opening indoor track and field meet, VMI Athletics sat down with head coach Darrin Webb to ask a few questions regarding the 2019 Keydet Invitational set for Friday and Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
Below are his responses:
What are your expectations for this season-opening meet?
I am excited to watch this team compete. They have had a good fall of training, and my expectations for this weekend are that we have the potential to have very good teams on both sides. We are a young team that wants to be very good (both as individuals and as a team), so my job is to remind them that this is a starting point, not an ending point. Go out, focus on what we worked on all fall, and compete at your very best. Regardless of the outcome, we will evaluate, make adjustments, and prepare to come back next week each day and prepare to improve. This is a long season and we want to peak at the right time.
Who are the team leaders and captains for this year's squad?
We have multiple team leaders; however, I expect all my upperclassman to be leaders both by example and by their day to day leadership. That enables this team to reach its potential. If each person does their part, and the team works as one unit, the results will be outstanding. No individual part is greater than the overall team, so everyone from the first class, right through to the Rats, needs to do their part.
Coming off furlough, how would you assess the team's training and conditioning coming into the meet?
Since we only returned to post on Monday night, and have had practice only Tuesday and Wednesday so far, I would say that we have many individuals that have done everything they could over break to come back and be immediately ready. We have a few that it will be a process and continued work over the next couple of weeks to be where they need to be. But overall, I was very pleased with how the team returned from break and excited and ready to get the season started.
