JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Heading into the final Southern Conference game of the season, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 14-5 score to host Jacksonville Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field in Jacksonville, Florida.
Only one point shy of 100 for his VMI career, senior attack Wesley Sanders reached the century mark by registering two assists in the game and now has 101 points over the past four seasons (69 goals, 32 assists). The Austin, Texas native joins only 16 former Keydets that have reached the 100-Point Club in the program's 35 years as an NCAA program.
The Keydets (2-10, 0-7) fell behind early as the Dolphins (7-6, 5-2) scored two quick goals by Mclean Chicquen. VMI's Austin Henry cut the deficit to 2-1 a few minutes later, but the Dolphins would go on to score six more goals in the first half while the Keydets logged two to go into halftime down by an 8-3 score. Jacksonville did not slow in the second half by tallying six more goals to VMI's two en route to the win over VMI.
The Dolphins won the possession battle by claiming 18 of 22 faceoffs which led to 45 shot attempts to VMI's 17 throughout the game. Relentless on defense, Jacksonville won the groundball battle by scooping up 38 to VMI's 22, held the Keydets to 0-3 on extra-man opportunities and caused eight VMI turnovers on clearing attempts.
VMI's Austin Henry and Ryan Perouty finished the game with two goals apiece to lead the Keydets while Donald Proper scored the other goal.
Chicquen finished the game with three goals to lead the Dolphins with Eric Applegate, Shawn Ewert and Evan Tyler each contributing two scores.
The Dolphins advance to next weekend's SoCon Tournament as a No. 3 seed behind No. 1 Richmond and No. 2 High Point. Furman also qualified for the tourney as the No. 4 seed.
VMI will conclude the 2018 season with a game at No. 11 Virginia Tuesday evening in Charlottesville. Faceoff is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Klockner Stadium.
