Logan and Kowal Pace Keydets on Opening Day of Season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Julia Logan finished sixth in the women's high jump and Griffin Kowal was sixth in the men's pole vault, leading the VMI track and field programs at their season opening event, the ETSU Invitational, Friday in Johnson City, Tenn.

Logan finished sixth in the high jump with a best clearance of 1.60 meters (5'3"), while Kowal cleared 4.35 meters (14'3 1/4") in the pole vault to record an impressive result in his collegiate debut.

Running event preliminaries were also contested Friday, and they saw Ariana Ruffin record the fifth-fastest time in the women's 400, a 59.38 that was the fastest indoor 400 by a Keydet woman since 2011. Kerisha Goode was fifth in the 200 in 25.36, and Lee Warren was sixth in the men's 60 hurdles with an 8.45 time. All three will advance to the event finals Saturday.

Goode narrowly missed the final in the 60, recording the ninth-fastest time in prelims with a 7.89 effort.

"I'm pleased with our season-opening effort today," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "Our team posted strong results and had great effort across the board, which was particularly impressive after being back from break for less than two days. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow."

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, when the Keydets resume action at the ETSU Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
