COLUMBIA, S.C. - Brandon White won the men's 5K, and the men's 4X800-meter relay was victorious in the fastest time among IC4A schools so far this outdoor season, pacing VMI track and field efforts on the opening day of the Weems-Baskin Invitational Friday in Columbia, S.C.

White was VMI's lone individual victor on the first day of the Keydet outdoor season, as he crossed the line in 15:05.52. It was the second-best outdoor 2nd best 5K of White's career. The Keydets were also victorious in the 4X8, where Josh Willard, Luke Phillips, Jay Broom and Luke Lysher timed in at 7:51.42 to win by over four seconds.

On the women's side, VMI recorded two top-five finishes. Elizabeth Johnston was fifth in the B portion of the hammer throw, as she stretched the tap to 44.26 meters (145'2") on her best effort and moved into seventh on VMI's all-time list in the event.

Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe, meanwhile, was fifth in the B section of the 100 dash. Ageypong-Wiafe crossed the line in 12.23 seconds, which was a new personal best and lowered the third-best time in VMI history. In addition, Mia McClain was ninth in the event and Bria Anderson finished 10th.

Other results included Julia Logan leading a group of Keydets in the B portion of the long jump, as she finished 13th with an outdoor personal best effort of 5.39 meters (17'8 1/4"), the eighth-best mark in school history.

"I'm pleased with our opening day," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "The relays carried over solid results from the indoor season, and Brandon White ran a strong race to win the 5K. On the women's side, we had good results as well and look forward to more tomorrow."

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, when the Keydets resume the Weems-Baskin Invite at 9 a.m.
