LEXINGTON, Va. - Scoring early and often, the VMI lacrosse team used a barrage of goals from a wide assortment of team members en route to a commanding 25-4 win over Hampton Saturday afternoon at Drill Field 2.
The 25 goals scored for the Keydets ranks fourth all-time for a single game in the record book. The tally is also the highest number of goals VMI has scored in a game since taking a 26-8 win over Virginia Wesleyan in 1992.
It was also the largest margin of victory (21) since VMI defeated Greensboro College, 26-4, in March of 1991.
Tom Nofi scored the first goal of the game at the 12:54 mark of the opening period and it was all VMI from that point as the Keydets led 5-0 after the first quarter and 13-0 at the half. Hampton's Darrel Kidd ended VMI's shutout effort with a goal at the 12:15 mark of the third quarter, but the Keydets allowed only three more goals the rest of the game.
The game proved to be momentous for seniors Jay Hill and Joseph Amato, who scored their first career goals during the game. Hill led the Keydets with four goals during the day while Amato added a score near the end of the third quarter. Senior Garrett Warren played goalie for the first time of his career and played nearly 37 minutes, earning three saves for the Keydets.
Every non-injured VMI team member saw action during the game, resulting in scoring opportunities for the entire roster. Freshmen Tyler Brock, Tristan Capes-Davis, Joseph Flynn, Scott Hayes, Timothy Barile, Austin Hughes, Brandon Crespo and Emory Lieber found the back of the net for their first career goals at VMI.
VMI shot the ball 57 times during the game and allowed only 15 for the Pirates. The Keydets also hustled to 53 ground balls to Hampton's 29.
The Keydets resume Southern Conference action next week as they travel to Jacksonville University on Saturday afternoon. The first faceoff is slated for a noon start in Jacksonville, Florida.
